MARCH MADNESS IS HERE!!! #wipmadness

If you’ve been looking for a challenge to get your writing in gear, you’ve come to the right place! Through the month of March we will be cheering each other on to meet challenging goals with our writing.

Also, this year we've decided to open up the challenge to Readers, Bloggers, and Illustrators. Anyone who wants to challenge themselves regarding books and win prizes for it!

Today is goal-setting day!
(But if you don't make it here on the first day, not to worry. Feel free to add your writing goals here any time during the month of March).

March Madness officially begins tomorrow, and this is how it will work.

1. You set a goal here (anything writing, reading, blogging, or otherwise book related). It can be as small and simple of a goal as turning off your Internet while you write during the month of March. Or it can be as large as writing or revising an entire book.

2. You check in daily through the month of March at our designated check-in points. Let us know how you're doing with your goal. Share your victories and struggles. Encourage others. The key is support and camaraderie.

3. We give you prizes just for stopping by and letting us know how you're doing, and for encouraging others!

Sounds easy and fun, right?! The following will be the check-in points for the month of March. We plan to have check-in posts up and running by 9AM PST (noon EST) each day.

Mondays – LS Taylor will host at  http://lstaylor.blogspot.com/
Tuesdays
– Denise Jaden will host at  http://www.denisejaden.com/Blog.html
Wednesdays
– Angelina Hansen will host at  http://yascribe.blogspot.com/
Thursdays
– Anne Hale will host at  http://www.annehale.com/
Fridays
– Deb Marshall will host at http://www.debamarshall.com/
Saturdays
– Jaye Robin Brown will host at http://jayerobinbrown.blogspot.com/
Sundays
– Shari  Green will host at http://sharigreen.wordpress.com/blog/

The prizes! We have some truly awesome prizes up for grabs this year! If you've followed my blog, you know about My Bookshelf Giveaways. I'll be opening up one of my bookshelves for people to choose something from throughout the month, starting today! I'll be giving away a book from my shelves to one person who comments below with their goals within the next 24 hours!

Some other goodies that are up for grabs (these are in no particular order and have been donated by my generous co-hosts for this event!):

Isn’t that quite the ARSENAL of prizes?! Wow, thank you all!!

AND…thank also to Anne Hale, we have a fabulous badge for this year’s event. It’s on the sidebar and also below, so go ahead and post it somewhere proudly and link it back to this post.

Here are my goals for the month of March: Get up half an hour earlier and write first thing each day. Turn off the Internet for morning writing. Re-write (from scratch) my WIP novel, FINDING HOPE. Yes, the entire thing.

Whew!

Don't forget to leave your goal(s) in the comments below, and head on over to http://www.annehale.com/   tomorrow for your first check-in! Remember, the more you check-in and encourage others, the better chance you have of winning some great prizes!

Now GO FORTH and be PRODUCTIVE!!!

  1. I can't believe I'm first to comment! I'm never first! Wheeeee! (aaaah, it's the little things sometimes)
I am so excited to set my March goals in stone, because I'm prepping for a big month. My goals:
    1. Finish novel WIP revision, send to betas, and get going on post-beta revision.
    2. Finish novella WIP draft, collect feedback, and start revising.
    3. Read at least 8 books. I'm trying for 100 this year, and I'm already a little behind. I have so many great things in my TBR pile!
    4. Beta-read other manuscripts. I just started one I'm enjoying a lot, and hope to get another to read soon. :-)
So excited to share this month of productivity with all of you!

    1. You must be on the East Coast (I set this to post at 3 am my time, or something like that). But YAY for being first!

Lots of great goals - glad you numbered them :)

    2. Wow, Kip. I will be cheering big cheers for you, not that I have a vested interest or anything. ^_^

  2. I'm going to give myself a very gentle goal this month, which is to make a complete, detailed outline for my current WiP. Or maybe that's not that gentle - I anticipate it requiring a lot of work - but it's just one thing, so I hope to accomplish it.

    Good luck everyone!

    1. Yes, outlines ARE a lot of work! All the best with yours!

    2. I'm all for the gentle this month. You can do it!

  3. Thanks for helping me be a little less aimless in my day-to-day writing. I switch between projects too much (because I love them all!). So for March, my goal is to finish drafting one of my nearly-finished drafts--and not to add any other goals to the month until I'm done that. I've blocked the work out into four sections, one to complete each week, and it's do-able if I don't wander onto other books...
I wish everyone a productive month and I look forward to checking in along the way.

    3. Ah shucks, you guys are great! I'm feeling it - I actually woke up early today to get to it. And I surpassed my goal (for the morning, that is. I'm still about 6 months behind--but that will end in March!)

  5. This month is going to be fun. :)

So, since I managed to make my surprise goal this past month of converting my novel from present tense to past, my number one goal now is to read through it one more time for clarity and voice. Changing the tense is one thing but now I want it to read well.

Goal number two is to send it back out into the wild, querying again, because that's what my goal was when I started this year.

Goal three? Read at least one novel per week. I haven't read The Hunger Games and now that I've changed the tense of my novel, I'd like to. (Also before the movie comes out.) And I have a huge to-be-read shelf otherwise, too.

And if I can, on top of all of this, I'd like to get in some fresh writing, either on Book 2 or one of my other projects.

Good luck to everyone with their goals!

  6. Yay March Madness!

    My goals:

    1. Write 20k on my current WIP
    2. Write a synopsis for the WIP that's out with betas
    3. Agent research/query letters for #2

    Good luck to everyone!

  7. I guess I'll jump in as well. Really, I need to accomplish two things:

    1. Finish beta-reading a work from a friend, preferably before mid-March. He needs it back well before April and I'm woefully behind.

    2. Finish the first draft of book 2 of my WIP. If I can keep with my daily goals, and it looks as though I can, I'll need to get another 50k words by the 31st, but I've been losing focus lately and having to play catch up.

What these will mean, I'm sure, is a more solid schedule. I'm going to need to work in the morning, which means dropping my internet time, plus working in the evening after dinner, which I'm *sure* my wife will be *thrilled* about. ;) Of course, I'll have to fit the actual cooking of the dinner in there somewhere.

Now, hopefully I can remember to come by and check in every day somewhere in there. The ol' memory's kinda clogged lately.

    1. Yeah, spouses are never thrilled when writers get together and set goals, are they? Best of luck with yours!

  8. My goals:

    Wake up and write!
Continue edits on my steampunk novel
Write 1 blog article per week
Get caught up on my TBR pile
    Write a review
    Submit a short story

I'm looking forward to this extra boost!

  12. Here I am! Ta-da! I'm convinced I'm crazy because not only am I signing up for 'March Madness', I've committed to Seekerville's March 'Speedbo'. (I ought to be committed!)

My goals sound puny compared to Kip's, but for me forward momentum is what counts, not necessarily the speed of it. I'm going to be away one of the weeks, so I'm setting three separate weekly goals:
    ~ Write and query a fresh magazine article;
    ~ Review and polish Novel #3;
    ~ Add at least 10,000 words to current w.i.p.;
~ And at least once a week, send out a query for the children's book I'm repping for a friend.

That should keep my nose to the proverbial grindstone, but I'll be glancing up long enough to check in and see how y'all are doing with your goals. :)

  13. Okay, here goes. Ahem. My goal is to write 3 new pages of Necrotek: Invasion at least four days a week, AND revise 10 pages a day of Song of Fury. If I can polish up a query letter during the month, that would be great too, but I'm going to focus on writing and revising.

Now, I better get at it... CYA.

  14. Moshi Moshi, minna! It means "hello everyone" for those who aren't big anime fans. :-)

My goals for this month coincide perfectly with Nanoedmo. I have a finished rough draft that I`m only about a third of the way through. I want it finished so that I can sent it out to beta readers in April and do my query letter for it.

I also have a short story that I will be writing a query letter for and sending it out. My goal is to get it send out to as many places as possible, but since first choice doesn't allow simultaneous submissions, I can't set a firm goal there.

2 - Begin my Book Map for the Cheryl Klein Workshop in April
3 - Blog twice weekly (I do this anyway so not really a goal, just a continue)
4 - Beta read for crit partners and a #wipmadness friend.

    3. Also to NOT turn on social media first thing in the morning but rather use that 30 minutes to write or read. **I admit, I'm a tad bit addicted to Twitter. Need to write more.

  32. Hello, everyone.

I met the lovely Laura Taylor and Dave Levine a couple years back when I attended one of the NaNo write-ins at Waves. Family obligations got in the way and I wasn't able to return for more sessions.

This year, I've kicked my butt into full-on writing mode and plan to rejoin the write-ins when the chaotic dust settles. I'm glad I still get the invites and notifications for The Other 11 Months. March Madness seems like a perfect way to keep me going.

My major goals for MM are (in order of importance):
    1) Finish drafting scenes for my overhauled MG WIP. I'm already ahead of schedule, so maybe MM can help me power through the next month.
    2) Concurrently, I'm revising the MG WIP from 1st person to 3rd person to see which works better overall.
    3) Outline/brainstorm ideas for my MG (or maybe younger) detective series. I intend to have episodic entries on my upcoming website and possibly an interactive book app with hidden objects, puzzles, riddles to help solve the case, etc.
    4) I've considered writing stories based on the MG detective series, but for adults. i.e. the MC is still a 9 year-old girl but she repeatedly gets herself mixed up in things she doesn't understand. Eventually, each story in the series will have a version from her POV and one with more adult tones or even from the antagonist's POV (which will usually be an adult). This one, so far, will have episodes on the website. Not sure if I'll be doing a "choose your own adventure" style interactive book app for the adult version.
    4) Map out course of action for my first run at Script Frenzy.
    5) Revamp the crime thriller series I've left simmering for the last X number of years.
    6) My sister wants me to read the Game of Thrones series before Season 2 airs in April. So, given all the above tasks, plus the writing/reading research I do, I just might read the first two books. :)

I know it seems like a lot, but somehow, I work better multitasking. Since I got back into a writing routine, I'm never not writing or reading about writing or reading, in general. You get the idea.

I have a daily writing schedule/quota and I want to stay in the creative zone as much as possible.

Thanks in advance for the support and encouragement. I felt motivated from speaking with Laura and Dave for just a few hours. I know that spending the next month with like-minded creative folks will only make my writing process better. I'm so glad I learned about this opportunity. This post solidifies my commitment to GET IT DONE! :)

  33. This month is going to be awesome! Some great looking, achievable goals all around. Mine is the finish the new draft (start from scratch) of my middle grade. Along with that I am creating a scrapbook and newspaper articles, letters etc for all of the back story, most of which you won't see at the beginning-but it will reveal itself as I go/write along.

    Good luck everyone!

  38. Hello All,

I can hardly believe that it is time for March Madness again. As usual, there is a lot on my plate. (I'm beginning to have sincere doubts that it will ever change. ;)) Anyway, while I have a lot going on, I look forward to the intense focus and working with you all as we progress through our goals.

    Here are mine:

    1) Revise WIP, write intro, and finally graduate from the MFA program I have been working on since 2004 (family really seems to make grad school take longer.)

    2) Set a schedule for balancing writing for fun and writing for work.

    3) Read more books - 1 per week, minimum.

Those are my goals. I wish you all an abundance of creativity, productivity, and fun. (I couldn't think of another -ivity . . . Oh well. Have a great time, and I look forward to writing with all you Wipsters!

  39. I'm going to keep my goal relatively simple: Write for fifteen or more minutes every day this month. I know if I get started on that fifteen minutes, I'll often end up doing more--it's the first couple of words that always hold me back!

Thanks for running this inspirational contest!

    My goals:

    2. Start and finish beta-ing MS 2.
    3. Turn off my internet while I write (good suggestion!).
    4. #5minblitz every day, no excuses.
    5. Write Part 2 of my WIP, which, judging from part 1, will be about 10,000 words.

I think I can do it, and OMGYAY for MarchMadness!

  42. Well, I'm going to jump in as well as I need some serious motivation - hope it's not too late to participate.

My goals for this month is to write every day for at least half an hour (no matter how tired or busy) at night and to also start writing during lunch hour (when I can actually take a full lunch hour). This is in regards to my individual WIP. Next, the work hard on outlining the next project with my writing partner. Third, my goal is to stay on top of my blog schedule and to make sure I write flash fiction every Wednesday. That should be good for now :)
    Good luck to everyone!

My goals for the month of March are:

  51. Hey y'all! I'm late to the party, too. I desperately need to join in the madness now more than ever! I had major spine surgery two weeks ago, and I'm having a heck of a time getting back in my writing groove. For one, to write, I have to sit, propped up with fluffy pillows, supporting the neck, with my laptop on my knees. I can't last 10 minutes at the desk without getting sore. But, with each day, my condition improves. Here are my March Madness goals:

By the end of the month...
~To be able to sit at the computer for a complete hour (without whining!)and work.

    Writing & Reading:
~Rewrite, yes from scratch, my YA historical fantasy (Mon-Thurs).
    ~Visit & comment 20-30 blogs weekly.
    ~Work on new wip (Fri-Sun).
~Read (reward!) at least 30 minutes a day.

Good luck to everyone w/goals. :))

  52. Oh Dear. I'm even later to the party! I can only say as this weekend was my birthday, I was having fun with family instead of buckling down with the wip. But I'm HERE now!
    My goals for March:
    1) To stop obsessively querying/tweaking and basically wasting time worrying about my finished ms. I need to concentrate on the new project and stop procrastinating with the last project.

    2) To write faithfully, every day, at least 500 words, on the new wip.

    3) To not be completely flattened and derailed by no answers and rejections for finished ms. It's what's been keeping me from concentrating on the new wip and it must stop.

    4) to read and comment on at least 3 blogs a day.
Thanks for putting March Madness together! Looking forward to a productive March!

My goals for this month are:

    1. Finish prewriting for WiP.
    2. Begin writing 1K per day as soon as prewriting is done.
    3. Continue researching/immersing myself in the time period/folklore as I complete 1 and 2.
    4. Continue querying my MG contemporary fantasy.

  54. Yay! Looking forward to this (and yes I'm late too, but sooo excited)! My goals for this month are:

    1. Outline new WIP.
    2. Write 1K per day on either my new or current WIP.
    3. Prep for querying my YA fantasy in April.
    4. Do better at commenting on writer friends' blogs on a daily basis, and on replying to peeps who comment on my blog.

YAY, thanks, I'm looking forward to this!

  55. Late to the party, too, but that's okay! Because I'm very behind on my WIP, which leads me to my one-and-only goal:

  61. Although this March is turning into one crazy busy month, I've decided to set some manageable goals for March Madness. So here goes:

    1. Design a writing schedule for the rest of the year including daily, weekly, monthly and so on goals and deadlines.

    2. Plan out structural bones of WIP novel and April’s Script Frenzy project. As a dedicated pantser I loath outlines, but I’ve found that if left to the ways of the pants I tend to not write. Decide if want to try more than these two projects. I’m leaning toward working on two screenplays at once – one with my writing partner and one solo effort.

    3. Revisit the current draft of my WIP and see if there is anything salvageable. Thanks to my awesome writing partner and best friend, I was able to make the existing pages print out in book form.

    4. Rein in my tendency to spend more time (okay most of my time) prewriting and filling in questionnaires about my characters and actual work on writing. And to that end, compile all my prewriting, research, and information into a single master document. I will try to not organize it in twenty different ways.

    5. Try to blog at least once a week for the last three weeks of March, check in at least seven times at each check-in blog, and to make a decent dent in my to-read list. I’ve been meaning to read Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief for the last six years. (And this might just be my manageable March Madness goal.

Thanks for allowing us Super Procrastinators to join late. I look forward to being a part of such a cool hashtag: #wipmadness.

  63. Hi! I meant to sign in on Feb 29th, but I forgot where it was! (I know, that's pathetic - I could've just looked at my twitter history, which is how I found it in the first place, but I never got around to it!) That was hard to admit. Anyway, I've set the goals, but the month hasn't cooperated. All three of my children have been sick with ear infections and strep...one at a time...yeah, nice. However, they're all better now (theoretically) so I'm going to try to reach the goals anyway! :) So here goes:

    1. Write 20K on my WIP (I've got ~65K right now), but I've only written about 3K so far this month. I think I'm going to try getting up at 5:30 and see how the morning works for me...we'll see if I can't make up for lost time...
    2. Write at least 2 blog posts (one down! yay!)
    3. Read. This one I've done easily. I'm almost done #5 for the month, but what else are you going to do when your kids just want to be held all day? Thank God for kindle and one-handed reading!

Okay, that's it. I'll try to make the check-ins and whatnot. I would really love a writing community to share the joys and struggles with. Thanks for hosting this!

    Alissa :)

  64. Better late than never, I'm in! Just started a new WIP, after a good amount of outlining and prewriting...so my goal will be to write 1,000 words a day, 5 days a week. I've never been a word-counter before, but I just got Scrivener, so I'm going to give it a try.

Good luck to everyone else with their goals! =)

  65. Just been linked to this by the WONDERFUL, LOVELY and AMAZING Laura Taylor. (HAI LAURA.) I have a couple of goals in mind that may or may not stay the same for the next couple of weeks:

    1) Endeavour to write at least a scene of (the unimaginatively named) "Chronicle II"

    2) Continue to blog at least once every three (or occasionally four) days about how boring my life is/how awesome my banjo is.

    3) Get at least 2000 words of this US Foreign Policy essay drafted.

I think that's enough to be going on with.

Hope everyone's going well, and good luck for the remaining 15 days!
