My Crazy Life!

I just got back from a very last-minute whirlwind vacation. You see, my husband had to attend a seminar in LA, and we decided we could make it a road trip for the same price as his flight. So the three of us, plus my mom, hopped in the car and drove pretty much straight through from just outside Vancouver, Canada to LA.

We're not as young as we used to be. That's the first thing our aching backs and knees told us. But all in all, we did have a great time. We started with The Joker strapped to the front of our car...

When we were a lot younger, my husband and I made the same trip with a Barbie strapped to the front of our vehicle. When my son heard this little tidbit, he came up with this idea.

Both my son and I braved California Screamin', which is a huge feat for us, since neither of us are daredevils...

And I got to share my favorite ride, Space Mountain, with my husband and son, who both ended up loving it. (This was a great point of contention early in our marriage, actually, when my husband was terrorized by his first experience on this ride.)

We got home just in time for me to teach at a homeschool co-op I'm a part of, only to have to turn around that afternoon and head back to Seattle for my husband to judge a bodybuilding competition. Oh, and did I mention I have an anthology releasing this Friday...

And half an hour before we left for California, I spilled tea on my laptop and had to leave it at home in a box of rice! But it turned out that unplugging was a great thing for me. I feel tired, yes, but at the same time more relaxed and centered. I highly recommend unplugging from technology for a time (hopefully by choice and not by tea mishap!)

Anyway, this is just a quick post to let you know why I have been so absent as of late. My life has been a bit crazy, but I'm back and excited to share our Alice in Wonderland inspired anthology with you. Stay tuned for an awesome contest to celebrate its release!

YA Scavenger Hunt - Secret Content From Kristi Cook!

Welcome to the YA Scavenger Hunt! If you're new to the hunt, you can find out more about how it works here. It's really easy--just add up RED numbers on all the red team posts, and then enter to win a book by EVERY AUTHOR on the Red Team!

I'm thrilled to welcome author Kristi Cook to the blog today for the YA Scavenger Hunt! I especially love authors with less than 7 letters in their first names, and Kristi's new book, MAGNOLIA, sounds awesome. Here's a little more about it...

"Jenna and Ryder are far from friends—until a storm stirs up their passion in this contemporary southern romance from New York Times bestselling author Kristi Cook.

In Magnolia Branch, Mississippi, The Cafferty and Marsden families are practically royalty. Neighbors since the Civil War, the families have shared vacations, holidays, backyard barbecues, and the overwhelming desire to unite their two clans by marriage. So when the families finally have a baby boy and girl at the same time, the perfect opportunity seems to have arrived.

Except Jemma Cafferty and Ryder Marsden have no intention of giving in to their parents’ wishes. They’re only seventeen—oh, and also? They hate each other.  But when a violent Mississippi storm ravages through Magnolia Branch, it unearths feelings Jemma and Ryder didn’t know they had. And the line between love and hate just might be thin enough to cross…"

And here's a Secret Excerpt from MAGNOLIA...not seen anywhere else!

THE KISS

I run out onto the front porch, trying to slow my racing heart as I peer out into the night.  The light gets closer and closer, causing hope to blossom in my chest.
“Hey!” a familiar voice calls out, and I nearly weep with relief.
He’s back.  Thank God.
But then…the relief is immediately replaced with anger.  “Where the hell have you been?” I ask, my voice shaking.
He clicks off the flashlight and makes his way up the porch steps.  “Didn’t you see my note?”
“Are you kidding me?”  I sputter.  “Do you have any idea how many hours you’ve been gone?”
“Yeah, sorry about that.  The house was fine, but the pool was a mess.  A tree fell through the screen, and the roof was ripped off the pool house.”
“You’re sorry?  That’s all you have to say?”  I take two steps toward him, fury thrumming through my veins.  “Do you have any idea how worried I was?  God, Ryder!  I thought you were lying in a ditch somewhere.  I thought you were hurt, or…or…”  I trail off, shaking my head.  “I was about to go looking for you, out in the pitch dark!”
He reaches for my hand, but I slap him away.
“Don’t touch me!  I swear, I can’t even look at you right now.”  I turn and reach for the door.  But before I can fling it open, Ryder pulls me toward him, his hands circling my wrists.
“Look, I’m sorry, Jemma.  It took me forever to get there, what with all the flooding and everything.  And then I was trying to clean stuff up and…well, I guess the time just got away from me.”
I try to pull away, but he tightens his grip.  “I didn’t mean to scare you,” he says.
“Well, you did scare me.”  I manage to pull one hand loose, and I use it to whack him in the chest.  “Idiot!”
“I’m fine, okay?  I’m here.”
“I wish you weren’t!” I yell, fired up now.  “I wish you were lying in a ditch somewhere!”  I stumble backward, my heel catching on the porch’s floorboards.
“You don’t mean that,” Ryder says, sounding hurt.
He’s right; I don’t.  But I don’t care if I hurt his feelings—I’m too angry to care.  Angry and relieved and pissed off and…and, God, I’m so glad he’s okay.  I thump his chest one more time in frustration, and then somehow my lips are on his—hungry and demanding and punishing, all at once.
I hear him gasp in surprise.  His mouth is hot, feverish even, as he kisses me back.  The ground seems to tilt beneath my feet.  I stagger back toward the door, dragging him with me without breaking the kiss.  Ryder’s tongue slips between my lips, skimming over my teeth before plunging inside.  And…

Oh.  My.  God.  No one’s ever kissed me like this.  No one.  His hands and his tongue and his scent and his body pressed against mine…it’s making me lightheaded, dizzy.  Electricity seems to skitter across my skin, raising gooseflesh in its wake.  I cling to him, grabbing fistfuls of his T-shirt as he kisses me harder, deeper.  I was meant to do this, I realize.  I was made to kiss Ryder Marsden.  Everything about it is right, like the last piece of a puzzle falling into place.

As a child, Kristi Cook took her nose out of a book only long enough to take a ballet class (or five) each week.  Not much has changed since then, except she’s added motherhood to the mix and enjoys penning her own novels as much as reading everybody else’s.  A transplanted southern gal, Kristi lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.

Congratulations on the new book, Kristi!

My Superhero / Star Wars Tree!

Here's how it started:

My husband found these beautiful decorations at Target while we were in Florida. One was Darth Vader, one was Yoda, one was Batman, and one was the Superman symbol. Upon arriving home, the Superman symbol had a little accident. So we were left with three.

These beautiful decorations absolutely would not have fit well with our current assortment of decorations (or would have gotten lost among the rest, which would have been a shame). I'm a fan of doing "theme" trees, so I decided my son and I would make some superhero decorations and have a superhero tree this year.

As we started to tire of making them with only half a tree filled, my son said, "But what about Darth Vader and Yoda?"

So now we have a half Superhero tree and a half Star Wars tree. My camera is lame, but here are a few shots (we filled in some gaps on the Star Wars side with action figures, but most everything else is handmade by either my nine year old son or myself).

 Ironman and Flash

Wonder Woman, Superman symbol, and several versions of Captain America (because he's my favorite superhero.)

Darth Vader's head is the tree-topper on the Star Wars side. We're still looking for Batman to use on the Superhero side, but for now, Ironman is our placeholder.

This R2D2 one is one of my favorite ones that I made.

The pickle in the Santa hat doesn't belong, but he was a gift from a friend this year.

Lots of Green Lantern and various Superhero symbols here...

In the middle (above) is the cool Batman one that we originally bought.

This is my son's favorite one that he made: Deadpool!

 Spawn and Superman.
Kia-Mundi action figure and a homemade Captain Rex.

Cool snowflakes, huh? Above is Darth Vader, below is Boba Fett and Clone Troopers (alternating)

It took me three tries to get a decent Punisher, but here he is.
And for all those who had suggested Spiderman for our last wooden figure...my son actually went with Venom, so I did a Spiderman ball instead.

I hope you enjoyed a little peek at our tree! Does anyone else you know do any kind of interesting themes for their trees?

12 Days of Christmas (YA Author Version)

In between Christmas parties and shaking my bootie (aka professional gigs with my Polynesian dance troupe), I've been spending most of my waking hours deep inside my revision cave. But the brain needs a break once in a while, just a bit of a detour to get the creative juices flowing again.

That is my only excuse for this piece of silliness. (By the way, I got this idea from the fabulous agent/author/ Girlfriend, Lucienne Diver, who recently posted her Twelve Days for Publishing Professionals)
