Friday Four! #Nanowrimo2014 and #WIPMadness Update!

Happy Halloween! It's been a long, long time since I've done a variety-of-what's-going-on-in-my-life post! Here it goes...
1. I've been exceptionally busy, with the launch of Fast Fiction in February, and then promotional opportunities as we're leading up to NaNoWriMo. Plus, add on top of that my young adult novel, Foreign Exchange, that just came out two weeks ago, and blog tours and interviews, etc, that goes along with that. But it's been a great year, seeing these books hit the shelves and hearing testimonies and reviews about how these books are affecting others.

I just had another testimonial come in for Fast Fiction that I'd love to share with you:
Three years ago I set myself the goal of writing a novel because I have always wanted to see if I could do it.  I quickly found myself completely lost and mired in the unique problems such a large project can create. I was so lost I failed to get very far with my novel until I was fortunate enough to hear Denise speak at my local writing group. Impressed by her presentation, I purchased her book "Fast Fiction" that night and found the encouragement, structure, and practical advice on process I needed to begin, and more importantly, finish the first draft of my first ever novel. I have shared her process with my writing group and encourage anyone else who may be wandering lost in the novel writing wilderness to check out her book. It will help! Thank you, Denise Jaden, for "Fast Fiction"!
 - Kirsten Mah
As you can imagine, I'm thrilled by this response! If you're reading Fast Fiction and/or using it for NaNoWriMo this year, I'd love to hear from you too!

2. Speaking of NaNoWriMo, yes, I will be drafting a new novel this November! The title is tentatively Chasing Waterfalls, and will be kind of a companion/follow up to my outdoor survival YA novel, Avalanche (which is still in pre-production - I should have some good news to announce regarding that one soon!). Also, if you've followed the hashtag #WIPMadness at all on Twitter, you know we hold weekly check-in's throughout the year to keep writers on track. I will be hosting each Monday throughout November right here, so whether you're fast drafting or setting some other kind of writing goal, I hope you'll stop in and check in with us here.

And...if you're considering jumping in on the NaNoWriMo bandwagon at the last minute, check out my Story Plan resource, free to my blog readers, to get all of your important story information quickly in one place.

3. I've been doing a little acting in my "spare" time, along with my son. Nothing of mine has aired yet, but my good friend sent this little screen shot of my so on Strange Empire. He loved seeing himself on the screen!

4. I just got back from the Surrey International Writers' Conference (SIWC) where I learn a huge amount each year. This year, among other things, I took some great classes on settings and photo-use for blogging and social media, reviews for authors, and writing with gusto. I came away refreshed and inspired. I spent much of the weekend live-tweeting some tidbits of what I was learning, so if you're interested in my "Cliff Notes," check out my Twitter feed from last weekend.

That's it for me at the moment (or all I can remember in my harried state!) How about you? What's new this fall? Are you planning on writing during NaNoWriMo, and if so, what do you plan to write?

A New Book From Evernight Teen! DORIANNA by Catherine Stine!

Fellow Evernight Teen author, Catherine Stine's new YA paranormal/horror, DORIANNA launches OCT 24! It's a fresh twist on the Oscar Wilde classic, A Picture of Dorian Gray for the Internet generation. If you like dark magic, get a tickle from nasty yet charismatic villains, a sizzling love triangle, if stories set in skeezy yet glitzy beach towns like Coney Island appeal to you, and you favor a breakneck roller-coaster ride in your read, then Dorianna just might be in your wheelhouse. Here's the lowdown:

Internet followers, beauty, power. It all sounded good.
Until it transformed into a terrifying
reality Dorianna couldn’t stop

When her father is jailed, her mother ships lonely, plain Dorianna to her aunt’s. There, Dorianna yearns to build a new identity, but the popular Lacey bullies her—mostly for getting attention from her ex, Ander.

Ander takes Dorianna to Coney Island where Wilson, a videographer, creates a stunning compilation of her. She dreams of being an online sensation, as she’s never even had a birthday party, and vows she’d give anything to go viral. Wilson claims he’s the Prince of Darkness and warns her the pledge has downsides. Dorianna thinks he’s joking. She has no idea of how dire the consequences might be.

New Release from Evernight Teen: MY SUMMER ROOMMATE by Birdie Hall!

mysummerroommateMY SUMMER ROOMMATE

Chloe needs a place to crash for the summer before college. When Chris offers, she moves in with him. It’s just for two months, no biggie. But soon she realizes she may have made a mistake. He is too perfect; a former snowboarder, laid-back and kind to boot, and he’s smitten with her. But she’s got trust issues and a relationship feels daunting. When he keeps trying to win her over, the temptation becomes overwhelming. Just as she gives in and decides it’s not worth fighting their emotions anymore, Chris reveals he’s made a stupid mistake which might ruin Chloe’s trust in him and tear them apart.

What readers are saying about MY SUMMER ROOMMATE: "Rejoice, y'all. We have a new author to count on for swoon-worthy Young Adult contemporary romance!"
(Kristen at Pretty Little Pages)

"My Summer Roommate by Bridie Hall was absolutely delicious! What I love about Ms. Hall's YA novels, is that they feel so real to me. The characters are ones that I feel I could easily pass walking down the sidewalk, or bump into at the store. She really fleshes out her characters in great detail and in such a manner, their personalities don't feel forced. It's so hard to find this in YA novels now, but Ms. Hall really kicks it."
(Sasha Hibbs, author of The Vulcan Legacies)

"She really gifts teens with self awareness and gives them tools to deal with heart break. She teaches them about the power of life lessons and pain in growing. She shows them the beauty of forgiveness."
(Catherine on Goodreads)

The book is available from Evernight Teen website and Amazon, and print copies from CreateSpace.

New Release from Evernight Teen: Following Chelsea by @sharigreen

My good friend, Shari Green, just released her debut YA novel, and it's wonderful!
promo-image-2
After her social life flatlines, seventeen-year-old Anna Richards wants nothing more than to lie low at her new school. But it seems Anna looks an awful lot like Chelsea, the sweet and popular girl who recently died, and Anna finds herself stepping into the void created by Chelsea’s absence.
Anna is determined to make the awkward situation work in her favor, because Chelsea didn’t just leave a spot open with the in-crowd; she also left a gorgeous—and now available—boyfriend. But it turns out that following Chelsea might be a lot more complicated than Anna expected.
FOLLOWING CHELSEA e-books are available from Evernight Teen (on sale this week!) and Amazon.
For those of you who prefer paperback over e-book, print copies are now available from Create Space, as well as from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
Signed paperback copies will soon be available at Coho Books in Campbell River, BC (hopefully sometime next week).
Evernight Teen books are really reasonably priced. I hope you'll pick up a copy of this one. Give a new author a chance, and if you'd really like to help her launch her career, leave a review when you're done on Amazon and and GoodReads. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy Following Chelsea as much as I did!

FOREIGN EXCHANGE is out today!

I'm thrilled to announce that my new young adult novel, FOREIGN EXCHANGE, is officially available to the world today! I will update as I find out more about where digital and print copies are available, but right now I know for sure you can get digital copies on the Evernight Teen website and also on Amazon.

ETA: And the print version is now available here!

Here's a little more about the book:

Jamie Monroe has always played it safe. That is, until her live-for-the-moment best friend, Tristan, jets off to Italy on a student exchange program. Left alone with her part-time mother and her disabled brother, Jamie discovers that she is quite capable of taking her own risks, starting with her best friend’s hotter-than-hot older brother, Sawyer. Sawyer and Tristan have been neighbors for years, but as Jamie grows closer to the family she thought she knew, she discovers some pretty big secrets.

As she sinks deeper into their web of pretense, she suspects that her best friend may not be on a safe exchange program at all. Jamie sets off to Europe on a class trip with plans to meet up with Tristan, but when Tristan stops all communication, suddenly no one seems trustworthy, least of all the one person she was starting to trust—Sawyer.

And here's what people are saying about FOREIGN EXCHANGE:

"Denise Jaden's newest novel, FOREIGN EXCHANGE, is a must read for contemporary YA fans. The characters leap off the pages and readers will furiously turn pages to keep up with the fast pace and intriguing premise. Definitely add a copy of Foreign Exchange to the top of your reading list."
~ Janet Gurtler, Rita Finalist and Best Selling Author of I'm Not Her

“I loved the well-drawn relationships in Foreign Exchange – the tension between Jamie and her mother, Jamie’s tenderness with disabled brother Eddy and especially the intense chemistry between Jamie and Sawyer. Their off-limits attraction and the increasingly dangerous hunt for his sister had me racing through the final chapters.
~ Jen Nadol, author of The Mark, The Vision, and This is How it Ends

"Foreign Exchange takes you on a thrilling ride through the exotic streets of Europe into the dark side of the fashion world. Our charming heroine will stop at nothing to save her best friend. A sweet dose of romance keeps it light."
~ Lee Strauss - author of The Minstrel Series

"Foreign Exchange is a fresh contemporary YA that will keep readers compulsively turning pages until the very end. Combining international intrigue with a steamy forbidden romance makes for a can’t miss read."
~ Eileen Cook, author of Year of Mistaken Discoveries.

"A pitch perfect voice and delicious chemistry between the characters kept me turning those pages!"
~ Tara Kelly, author of Amplified and Encore

"Foreign Exchange is heart pounding and suspenseful...the teenage dream of escaping the boredom of suburbia by travelling Europe and spending quality time with a hot guy shifts into a dangerous nightmare."

~ D.R. Graham, author of Rank and the Noir et Bleu MC series.

"Denise Jaden is a force to be reckoned with! I loved her new book so much. This one is a thrill ride with full realized, lovable characters, and a refreshingly unique premise."
~ Rachel Shane, author of the upcoming Alice in Wonderland High

Have you seen the trailer yet? It's here too!

FOREIGN EXCHANGE – TEASER EXCERPT
(In this excerpt, Jamie's best friend, Tristan, has left for Europe on an academic exchange program. Jamie is secretly planning to meet up with Tristan when she leaves on a class trip to Spain. While waiting, she does something she promised Tristan she'd never do--flirting with Tristan's untrustworthy brother, Sawyer. But Jamie's sure she can trust Sawyer...)

“Hi,” I say when I find Sawyer at his locker. My face is beaming like someone plugged me into a wall socket.

“Jamie.” He smiles back, but his eyes are rimmed with red like he's really tired. “Have you heard from my sister again?”

Not exactly the topic of conversation I'd hoped for. I nod. “I got another email. She got to Milan fine and is settling in.”

Sawyer pulls out his phone. He looks at me, then at his phone, then back at me again.

“She's...everything's okay with the exchange program?” he asks. His words are tentative.

“Tristan's fine, Sawyer. She says the schoolwork is going to be harder than expected because of not speaking Italian, but otherwise she's great. She loves Europe.” He looks at his phone again. I put my hand out. “Here, you want me to show you the email?”

He hands me his phone. It takes me a minute to figure out how to log in through his browser, but I hope I can put his mind at rest. My email is coming up on the screen when the first bell rings. I have English first class and my teacher's a real stickler about tardiness. I glance down the hall toward my locker.

“You go,” Sawyer says, his palm open for his phone. “I'll look it over and see you in class later. Okay?”

“I—” I’m not sure what to say. Tristan’s been talking about finding my dad in her emails. It’s our big secret and she’d been adamant about not sharing it with anybody. But I think I can trust Sawyer. And, after all, it is my secret to keep. If I’m making a mistake it’ll only hurt me. “Okay,” I say, finally, passing his phone back to him. Our fingers brush against each other, but we don’t have time to let them linger.

By the time I get to English, I'm thinking of another problem. Tristan hadn't wanted me to tell anyone about her modeling over there. I’ll have to tell Sawyer not to mention it.

When I dash into class later, Sawyer’s already seated in his usual seat with his head down. He's flipping through something on his phone, and again I think about signing him into my email earlier. Instead of feeling nervous, after having some time to think about it, trusting him makes me feel closer to him. Like we share our private emails with each other all the time.

“Hey.” I sit down beside him.

He finishes typing something, and then shoves his phone away before Mr. Echols catches sight of it.

“Hey,” he says finally, smiling over at me. He still looks really tired.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

He blinks a few times, looking down, and I wonder if he isn't okay. Is something really wrong? “Do you...” he trails off and seems to rethink what he's saying. “Do you think with the program... do you think everything's okay about that? I don't know what's going on, but maybe...I mean, I think maybe
Tristan’s over there trying to model.”

I swallow hard. This is the moment of truth, where I have to decide how much I can trust him.

But his pause is barely long enough for me to open my mouth. “I need to get on that class trip, Jamie. I need to stop my sister from doing anything stupid.”

A host of emotions rush through me. Fear, anger, betrayal.

“Wait, what?” I ask him. “You're going to try to get on the class trip so you can interfere with Tristan's dream?” Tristan’s told me how jealous he can be. How he’s done this before.

Sawyer looks over at me with wide eyes, like he can't believe I'm calling him out on it.

Mr. Echols interrupts us, starting class, but I'm too upset to pay attention to a single word he's saying.

Sawyer passes me a note halfway through class.

I’m seriously worried about my sister, Jamie. I have to tell you more about the program. Just hear me out. Please?

I keep my eyes from Sawyer for the rest of class. I'm sure he knows I'm angry, but he doesn't try to talk to me again, at least for now. I'm even angry at myself for getting so caught up in my feelings for him and not noticing all the things that Tristan's warned me about.

YA Scavenger Hunt - Secret Content From Kristi Cook!

Welcome to the YA Scavenger Hunt! If you're new to the hunt, you can find out more about how it works here. It's really easy--just add up RED numbers on all the red team posts, and then enter to win a book by EVERY AUTHOR on the Red Team!

I'm thrilled to welcome author Kristi Cook to the blog today for the YA Scavenger Hunt! I especially love authors with less than 7 letters in their first names, and Kristi's new book, MAGNOLIA, sounds awesome. Here's a little more about it...

"Jenna and Ryder are far from friends—until a storm stirs up their passion in this contemporary southern romance from New York Times bestselling author Kristi Cook.

In Magnolia Branch, Mississippi, The Cafferty and Marsden families are practically royalty. Neighbors since the Civil War, the families have shared vacations, holidays, backyard barbecues, and the overwhelming desire to unite their two clans by marriage. So when the families finally have a baby boy and girl at the same time, the perfect opportunity seems to have arrived.

Except Jemma Cafferty and Ryder Marsden have no intention of giving in to their parents’ wishes. They’re only seventeen—oh, and also? They hate each other.  But when a violent Mississippi storm ravages through Magnolia Branch, it unearths feelings Jemma and Ryder didn’t know they had. And the line between love and hate just might be thin enough to cross…"

And here's a Secret Excerpt from MAGNOLIA...not seen anywhere else!

THE KISS

I run out onto the front porch, trying to slow my racing heart as I peer out into the night.  The light gets closer and closer, causing hope to blossom in my chest.
“Hey!” a familiar voice calls out, and I nearly weep with relief.
He’s back.  Thank God.
But then…the relief is immediately replaced with anger.  “Where the hell have you been?” I ask, my voice shaking.
He clicks off the flashlight and makes his way up the porch steps.  “Didn’t you see my note?”
“Are you kidding me?”  I sputter.  “Do you have any idea how many hours you’ve been gone?”
“Yeah, sorry about that.  The house was fine, but the pool was a mess.  A tree fell through the screen, and the roof was ripped off the pool house.”
“You’re sorry?  That’s all you have to say?”  I take two steps toward him, fury thrumming through my veins.  “Do you have any idea how worried I was?  God, Ryder!  I thought you were lying in a ditch somewhere.  I thought you were hurt, or…or…”  I trail off, shaking my head.  “I was about to go looking for you, out in the pitch dark!”
He reaches for my hand, but I slap him away.
“Don’t touch me!  I swear, I can’t even look at you right now.”  I turn and reach for the door.  But before I can fling it open, Ryder pulls me toward him, his hands circling my wrists.
“Look, I’m sorry, Jemma.  It took me forever to get there, what with all the flooding and everything.  And then I was trying to clean stuff up and…well, I guess the time just got away from me.”
I try to pull away, but he tightens his grip.  “I didn’t mean to scare you,” he says.
“Well, you did scare me.”  I manage to pull one hand loose, and I use it to whack him in the chest.  “Idiot!”
“I’m fine, okay?  I’m here.”
“I wish you weren’t!” I yell, fired up now.  “I wish you were lying in a ditch somewhere!”  I stumble backward, my heel catching on the porch’s floorboards.
“You don’t mean that,” Ryder says, sounding hurt.
He’s right; I don’t.  But I don’t care if I hurt his feelings—I’m too angry to care.  Angry and relieved and pissed off and…and, God, I’m so glad he’s okay.  I thump his chest one more time in frustration, and then somehow my lips are on his—hungry and demanding and punishing, all at once.
I hear him gasp in surprise.  His mouth is hot, feverish even, as he kisses me back.  The ground seems to tilt beneath my feet.  I stagger back toward the door, dragging him with me without breaking the kiss.  Ryder’s tongue slips between my lips, skimming over my teeth before plunging inside.  And…

Oh.  My.  God.  No one’s ever kissed me like this.  No one.  His hands and his tongue and his scent and his body pressed against mine…it’s making me lightheaded, dizzy.  Electricity seems to skitter across my skin, raising gooseflesh in its wake.  I cling to him, grabbing fistfuls of his T-shirt as he kisses me harder, deeper.  I was meant to do this, I realize.  I was made to kiss Ryder Marsden.  Everything about it is right, like the last piece of a puzzle falling into place.

As a child, Kristi Cook took her nose out of a book only long enough to take a ballet class (or five) each week.  Not much has changed since then, except she’s added motherhood to the mix and enjoys penning her own novels as much as reading everybody else’s.  A transplanted southern gal, Kristi lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.

Congratulations on the new book, Kristi!
